Comprehensive support program for relatives caring for someone with dementia

The comprehensive support program for the relatives of dementia patients aims to ease the burden of care, providing not only informational and psychological assistance but also practical tools for organizing caregiving. The program covers key aspects, from learning the basics of interacting with the patient to legal and financial support. Special attention is given to the psychological state and maintaining a healthy psychological atmosphere in the patient’s family.

The goal of this program is to create a sustainable support system that will allow relatives to preserve their own physical and mental health, minimize stress, and provide the most comfortable living conditions for both the patient and those who care for them. Only by supporting those who provide care can we talk about truly quality medical and social care for dementia patients.

How does it work?

Format:

  • 12 individual online sessions (once a week, for 3 months)
  • Support group chats (exchange experiences with other families)
  • Access to materials: videos, checklists, doctor contacts

This program is for you if you:

  • Feel like you are "drowning" in caregiving for a relative with dementia
  • Are tired of conflicts in the family and feelings of guilt
  • Want to learn how to care without losing yourself

First Month: Accepting the Situation

1. Introduction + "Flight Review"

  • We will analyze what is really happening with your relative (why they shout/wander/forget who you are).
  • We will check your stress level (a simple test).

2. How to Stop Getting Angry?

  • The "It’s not him, it’s the disease" technique: learning not to take aggression personally.
  • We will review your notes: which moments trigger the most anger?

3. Safety and Daily Routine

  • Checklist "How to arrange the house" (remove carpets, put locks on windows).
  • Sample schedule for the patient: when to eat, walk, and sleep.

4. Who Does What in the Family?

  • - We divide responsibilities: who goes to the pharmacy, who stays in the evenings.
  • - We learn how to ask for help without feeling guilty.

Second Month: Taking Care of Yourself

5. "I Have the Right to Rest"

  • We create a list of "Who can substitute" (friends, social services, volunteers).
  • The "5 minutes for myself" technique: how to quickly recharge.

6. How Not to Fight with Family Members?

  • We practice phrases: "I’m struggling, let’s divide..." instead of accusations.
  • We analyze a real conflict from your family.

7. Where to Get Help?

  • A list of benefits, free caregivers, support groups (e.g., "Altsrus").
  • Instructions: how to apply for disability status.

8. 3-Month Plan

  • How much do we spend on medications/caregivers?
  • Schedule of "days off" for you (e.g., every Saturday from 14:00 to 18:00).

Third Month: Preparing for the Future

9. If the Disease Progresses

  • How to feed/bathe if the person doesn’t understand words?
  • Legal issues: guardianship, hospice.

10. Working with Sadness

  • Writing a "letter to a loved one" (to release emotions).
  • We discuss fears: "What if I can’t cope?"

11. Summary: What Has Changed?

  • We compare: how things were 3 months ago and how they are now.
  • We adjust the plan if necessary.

12. Farewell

  • We draw "Our Family Today" (just with a pencil!).
  • We leave you with a "crisis reminder" (phone numbers, action algorithms).

What Else is Included?

  • Group meetings twice a month — stories from other families, advice.
  • Chat with a psychologist — available at any time.
  • Guest speaker — lawyer (how to apply for benefits);
  • Guest speaker — neurologist (news about dementia treatment).

Program Results

  • You will understand the disease — and stop blaming your relative.
  • You will have a clear care plan + a list of helpers.
  • Stress will decrease — you will learn to rest without guilt.
  • The family will become a team — fewer arguments, more support.

Svetlana, 52 years old (cares for her mother):

"After 3 months of the program:

- I stopped shouting at my mother — now I know how to distract her during moments of aggression.

- My husband took over the doctor visits.

- I arranged a free caregiver through social services — I have time for myself."

How to Start?

  • Write to us 1-2 main problems (e.g., "I can’t handle my mother’s aggression").
  • Free 30-minute consultation — we’ll get to know each other and discuss the program.
  • Choose a time — we will adjust to your schedule.

Important: You are not alone! 90% of families go through the same challenges — and overcome them.

"Dementia is like a storm. But you can learn to build a strong boat and sail, even when the waves are high."
